Once abnormalities are detected, cytological examinations are performed to confirm a cancer diagnosis. This includes exfoliative cytology, where cells are examined after being shed from body surfaces, or Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC), which involves using a thin needle to extract cells for examination. If necessary, a biopsy may be performed, where a tissue sample is taken for a more thorough investigation under a microscope. This step is essential in confirming the presence of cancer and determining the best course of action for treatment.
